Abhyanga is a type of massage that finds its origin in Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is an ancient healing system which may be traced back to the Vedas (5000-4000 BC). It is known as the science of life for its holistic approach and its focus on promoting and maintaining health. Ayurveda believes that the elements that are present in the macrocosm or the universe, such as Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth can also be found in the microcosm, like the human body. These elements, or pancamahabhutas, combine together to form three main humours, or doshas, known as Vata, Pitta, Kapha. These basic units of the living organism are responsible for the different physiological and psychological functions and their equilibrium is essential for health. On the other hand, their imbalance or disturbance may lead to disease.
According to Ayurveda, health promotion and maintenance can be achieved through wholesome diet and lifestyle, as well as through some purificatory therapies, called pancakarma. Ayurvedic massage is commonly used as a preparatory measure to pancakarma, but in healthy individuals, it is a way to prevent diseases.
In Sanskrit, Abhyanga means ‘rubbing of oil on certain parts or the whole body’ in the direction of hair or downward direction (Anuloma). It is excellent to nourish the skin, to prevent Vata disorders, such as constipation, flatulence, aches and pains, anxiety, etc., to soothe the nerves, to promote sleep, eyesight and longevity, to improve blood circulation, to relax and de-stress.
THE TREATMENT:
Abhyanga is performed with warm medicated oil by two therapists working in synchronicity on both sides of the client. It is a dynamic massage that is performed in different positions.
